Bike Economics was a a lot of fun, a great way to see what local bike entrepreneurs have been doing—and was also a successful fundraiser for the new Women Leaders in Active Transportation Fund.

We’re looking forward to making the event an annual one. Next year, our first grant recipients will present about their work.

And who will these leaders-in-the-making be? It’ll be a while longer before we know. We’re hard at work in the text production factory, figuring out the exact parameters of what this thing will look like. When it’s ready (soon!) we’ll announce it here and ask you all to spread the word to women and girls who might want to apply. Maybe you’re one of them!

In the meantime, you can help us increase the amount of support we’re able to give by making a donation. Your gift will make an impact in helping someone realize their abilities and transform our community.

To stay in the loop about the Fund and the annual Bike Economics event, email elly at portlandsociety dot org to join the email announcement list.

A big thanks to everyone who helped make last night’s Bike Economics event a success!

For a sense of the event’s energy and some profiles of inspiring women in bike business who presented, check out the detailed coverage by BikePortland contributer Jenn Clunie and questions posed to a few presenters by Sarah Mirk of the Mercury.

You can find out more about our presenters here, and our sponsors (including the delicious food and drinks) here.

We raised over $1,000 for the new Women in Active Transportation Fund, and will be releasing more details about that as soon as we have worked them out.

If you’re a woman in the Portland area with a passion for business and bicycling, please join the email list for the newly forming Portland Society. We’ll keep the spirit of Bike Economics going with monthly networking and social events.

Thank you again! It was a pleasure to organize this event and we are looking forward to many more inspiring endeavors.

Bike Economics: A fundraiser showcasing local, woman-owned, bicycle-oriented businesses
When: Thursday, May 6, from 7:30pm to 9:30pm
Where: United Bicycle Institute, 3961 N Williams Ave, Portland
Donation: $10 to $30

Come meet a cross-section of people in Portland’s bicycle and business communities, learn more about a few local businesses you might not have heard much about and a few that you have doubtless seen all over the news, and be inspired by the possibilities for building a successful business around bicycling.

Check out our all-star list of featured business owners.

Funds raised by this event will create a new scholarship fund. The fund will assist women in attending conferences or pursuing leadership training or professional development workshops for the purpose of enhancing their ability to act as leaders in active transportation.

Featured business owners will have stations set up where they show their work. During the evening we’ll ask each of them to spend one or two minutes each informally telling the room about their work.

A sliding scale donation at the door of $10 to $30 will benefit a new scholarship fund for woman leaders in active transportation. Admission will include light food, drinks, and some spectacular door prizes: check out our sponsors page to see what’s in store.

Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend!
